How We Work

Editorial Standards

Our commitment to accuracy, independence, and fair treatment of every product we cover.

Last updated: April 2025

Our promise: Every piece of content on Markham Business is produced with accuracy, fairness, and reader usefulness as the primary goals. Advertisers and affiliate partners have no influence over what we publish, how we rank products, or what conclusions we draw.

How We Conduct Card Reviews

When we review a credit card or financial product, our process is structured to give readers an honest, comparable assessment:

1

Product research

We collect product details directly from the card issuer's official website, cardholder agreements, and publicly available disclosures.

2

Criteria scoring

Each card is scored on a consistent set of criteria: annual fee, purchase interest rate, welcome bonus, rewards earn rate, insurance benefits, and ancillary perks.

3

Comparative analysis

We place the card in context by comparing it with similar products in the same category — for example, no-fee cash-back cards or premium travel cards.

4

Editorial recommendation

Our reviewer provides a plain-language verdict on who the card is best suited for, its main strengths, and any meaningful drawbacks.

5

Fact-check and publish

A second editor reviews all figures and claims against primary sources before the review goes live.

Data Verification & Quarterly Reviews

Financial product terms change frequently — interest rates are adjusted, welcome bonuses expire, and annual fees are revised. We maintain accuracy through a structured review cycle:

  • Quarterly audits: Every credit card and financial product page is reviewed at least once per quarter. Editors visit each issuer's official website and cardholder agreement to confirm that rates, fees, and benefits are still accurately reflected in our content.
  • Triggered updates: When a reader reports a discrepancy, or when we learn through issuer communications or industry news that a product has changed, we update the relevant content within 5 business days.
  • "Last verified" dates: Where applicable, we display the date on which data was last confirmed against the issuer's official source, so readers can judge the currency of the information.

Despite our best efforts, product details can change without notice. We always recommend confirming current terms directly with the card issuer before applying.

Editorial Independence from Advertisers

Our content team and our commercial team operate separately. The following rules apply without exception:

  • Advertisers and affiliate partners may not request changes to editorial content, reviews, or rankings as a condition of their relationship with us.
  • A product's ranking in any comparison list is determined solely by our editorial criteria — not by the size of the commission we earn or whether an affiliate relationship exists.
  • Products without affiliate relationships are included in our content when they represent meaningful options for readers. We do not exclude relevant products simply because they do not generate revenue for us.
  • All sponsored or paid placements are clearly labelled. If content has been produced in partnership with an advertiser, that relationship is disclosed prominently.

Author Qualifications

Content on Markham Business is produced by writers and editors with backgrounds in personal finance, financial journalism, and consumer advocacy. Our team members have experience with:

  • Canadian personal finance, including credit card products, mortgages, insurance, and investment vehicles.
  • Regulatory frameworks applicable to Canadian consumers, including FCAC guidelines, OSFI regulations, and provincial consumer protection legislation.
  • Editorial standards and fact-checking processes at Canadian financial media publications.

We do not publish content from writers who have undisclosed conflicts of interest with the products or issuers they cover.

Correction Policy

We take factual accuracy seriously. When an error is identified — by our team, a reader, or an issuer — we follow this process:

  • Minor corrections (typos, formatting issues, minor data updates): corrected immediately, no notation required.
  • Material corrections (errors that could affect a reader's financial decision): corrected within 2 business days with a brief correction notice appended to the article noting what was changed and when.
  • Significant errors(misleading claims, substantially wrong figures): corrected immediately, with a prominent notice at the top of the affected article.

We do not silently delete or rewrite content to remove errors without acknowledgment where that error may have affected readers.

How to Report an Error

If you spot a factual error, an outdated product detail, or anything else that does not look right, please tell us. We investigate all reports promptly.
