York Regional Police have charged a man in connection with a retail theft investigation and are appealing for additional victims who may have been targeted by the same suspect. The investigation, announced on Friday, April 10, centres on the theft of beauty supplies from a retail store in the Township of King, with a subsequent search warrant at a Pickering residence uncovering additional stolen property.
The Investigation
On Monday, April 6, 2026, officers from the York Regional Police #1 District responded to reports of a theft at a retail establishment in the area of King Road and William Street in the Township of King. The suspect entered the store, stole a quantity of beauty supplies, and fled the scene.
Through their investigation, officers were able to identify the suspect. On Tuesday, April 7, the suspect was arrested and charged. A search warrant was then executed at a residence in the City of Pickering, where investigators recovered additional stolen property beyond what was taken in the King Township incident.
Alex Cioriia, 23, of the City of Pickering, has been charged with Theft Over $5,000 and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000. The combined value of the charges indicates that the total value of stolen property, including what was recovered at the Pickering residence, exceeded $5,000.
Appeal for Additional Victims
The recovery of additional stolen property at the Pickering residence suggests that the suspect may have been involved in similar thefts at other retail locations. York Regional Police have released an image of the suspect and are asking business owners and retail managers across the region to review their own security footage and inventory records to determine whether they may have been victimized.
This type of appeal is significant because organized retail theft often involves repeated targeting of similar stores across a wide geographic area. Suspects may hit multiple locations over a period of days or weeks, and individual stores may not immediately realize they have been victimized if the losses are not immediately apparent. Beauty products are a particularly common target because they are high-value, compact, easy to conceal, and have a ready resale market.
Retail Theft in York Region: A Growing Concern
The King Township investigation is part of a broader pattern of retail theft that continues to affect businesses across York Region and the Greater Toronto Area. While retail theft has always existed, businesses and police services report that the problem has grown in both frequency and the value of goods taken in individual incidents.
Several factors contribute to the trend. High-value consumer goods, particularly cosmetics, electronics, and health products, are attractive targets because they can be resold quickly through online marketplaces or informal channels. The rise of online resale platforms has made it easier for thieves to convert stolen merchandise into cash without the risks associated with traditional fencing operations.
For retail businesses in Markham, Richmond Hill, and the surrounding area, the investigation is a reminder of the importance of loss prevention measures. York Regional Police regularly advise retailers to:
- Ensure that security cameras are functioning and positioned to capture clear footage of the store interior, particularly high-value product areas
- Train staff to be aware of common theft indicators, including customers who spend an unusually long time in high-value aisles, who are wearing oversized clothing, or who are carrying large bags
- Implement inventory tracking systems that can quickly identify unusual shrinkage patterns
- Consider product security measures such as locked display cases, electronic article surveillance tags, and controlled access to high-value items
- Report thefts to police promptly, even if the loss seems minor, as individual reports help police identify patterns and connect cases
