Richmond Hill's dining scene has quietly become one of the most diverse in the GTA. While Yonge Street's chains get all the attention, the genuine gems are tucked into plazas you might never notice on a drive-by. Here are 10 spots locals love that almost no travel publication has written about.
1. Tirgan Restaurant — Persian Cuisine
The chelo kebab koobideh here rivals anything on Toronto's North York Persian Strip. Saffron rice with butter, tender ground-beef kebabs, and the bread service arrives at the table within minutes of sitting down. Family-run, warm atmosphere.
2. Pho Pasteur 2 — Richmond Hill Centre Plaza
The original Vietnamese pho destination for North Richmond Hill. The broth is deeply layered, the bean sprouts are always fresh, and the bun bo hue is the best in York Region.
3. La Bottega di Nonno — Italian
House-made pasta, a small wine list curated entirely from independent Italian producers, and a warm room you'll want to linger in. The cacio e pepe is criminally underordered.
4. House of Mandarin — Cantonese
Old-school dim sum where the carts still circulate. The siu mai, har gow, and pork buns are textbook perfect. Get there before 11:00 on weekends.
5. Aria Mediterranean — Yonge & Carrville
The lamb chops are the move. The chef trained in Tel Aviv and the menu shows it — every dish has a precise balance of acid, fat, and spice.
6. JOY Cafe — Korean Brunch
A Korean-Canadian fusion brunch spot that's developed a serious following. The bulgogi benedict is genuinely innovative and worth ordering.
7. Sun Dynasty — Sichuan
Mapo tofu so good it'll change your standard for the dish. The fish fillet in chili oil is the showpiece order; bring friends so you can also try the cumin lamb.
8. Pita Hut — Lebanese
The shawarma plates and mixed grills here are the best Lebanese north of Steeles. Tahini dressing is house-made daily.
9. Ramen Sansho — Japanese
Quiet, focused, no fuss. The tonkotsu broth is simmered 18 hours and you can taste it. The seasonal yuzu shio in summer is exceptional.
10. The Greek Place — Souvlaki & Mezze
A family-run Greek spot serving genuinely authentic souvlaki, taramosalata, and saganaki. The bread is fresh, the lemon potatoes are the best in the area.
How to find more hidden gems
The rule we use: any restaurant where the parking lot is full at 8:30 PM on a Tuesday is worth a look. Most of our list above passes that test. Browse all Richmond Hill restaurants in our directory and check back monthly for new spotlights.
